Hair surgery is a cosmetic procedure which presents a solution to hair loss and balding. Hair together with its follicle is transplanted from a place of hair growth on the scalp to a balding area. Because the place where the hair is taken from is genetically resistant to balding, its follicles retain this property in their new location, making it an area of hair growth. The surgery consist of hundreds or thousands of hair grafts, until the bald area is sufficiently covered. Sometimes more than one procedure is needed to provide the desired cover.

Older methods of grafting, using strip surgery are giving way to follicular unit extraction. In strip surgery, a number of follicles are removed and grafted at one, whereas in follicular unit extraction, each follicle is grafted individually.
