Surgical hair restoration is a cosmetic procedure whereby hair is surgically removed together with its follicles from areas of hair growth, to areas of baldness. Many hundreds or thousands of grafts are carried out in the procedure, which can take a few hours. Sometimes, more than one surgery is required to achieve the desired amount of cover.

Once hair is restored to the bald area, the solution is permanent. This is because certain parts of the scalp are resistant to balding, and follicles grafted from these areas retain this property in their new location. Although the hair may fall out after surgery, it quickly regrows and continues to grow and thicken in the months that follow.
